KoRo Pineapple Rings 200g — Costa Rican pineapple, dried whole and left alone

KoRo Pineapple Rings are dried pineapple rings from Costa Rica in a 200 g bag. Pineapple went in, water came out, and nothing else joined it along the way — no syrup, no sugar dusting and nothing to keep the colour bright. What you get is a soft, chewy ring that tastes like pineapple turned up several notches.

Why this one

  • Grown in Costa Rica: the climate does most of the work on sweetness long before anyone starts drying anything.
  • Rings, not chunks: they stay whole, so you can eat one like a biscuit or chop them down for whatever you are cooking.
  • No added sugar: dried pineapple is already about as sweet as fruit gets. Adding more would be showing off.
  • 200 g resealable bag: the smallest format in the KoRo fruit line-up here, and a sensible size for a first go at the brand.

How KoRo makes it

KoRo Handels GmbH is a Berlin bulk food company that built its name on large formats and short ingredient lists. These rings are dried rather than freeze-dried, which is the fork in the road that decides the texture: drying leaves the fruit dense and pliable, freeze-drying would have made it brittle. Nothing is added at any point.

Taste and texture: sweet with a real tang behind it, the acidity you get from pineapple rather than the flat sugariness of glacé fruit. The rings are leathery at the rim and softer towards the middle, and they take a bit of proper chewing, which is half the appeal.

When to reach for it

These earn their keep on a walk. Pineapple rings survive a rucksack, weigh almost nothing and beat a cereal bar on the fourth hour of a hike. Chopped small they also belong in a sweet-and-sour pan sauce or a rice dish, and one ring sitting on the edge of a glass makes a very convincing case that you meant to make a cocktail all along.

Frequently asked

  • Are they crunchy? No — these are chewy. If you want crunch, the freeze-dried fruit in the KoRo range is the one to look at.
  • Can I cook with them? Yes. They rehydrate in warm liquid, so they work in curries, chutneys and baking as well as straight from the bag.
  • How should I store them? Seal the bag or decant into a jar and keep them cool and dry. Left open they stiffen up and lose their bend.
